Kat von D Beauty needed a site experience that was unique, independent, and a powerful artistic expression of Kat Von D. It not only had to showcase vegan, high-quality cosmetics and perfumes, but amplify and inspire personal expression. It had to be bold, unapologetic, and different from all other beauty brands. Typographical Anomalies

As with all e-commerce projects, we needed to create a system that could manage varying imagery and content. KvD was a unique challenge in that it also had to present the varying, hand-drawn type that Kat is known for in a cohesive manner. And there is a lot of it.

The Artistry Collective

Kat had just created a group of talented makeup artists who would be her emissaries to events and launches and shoot how-to videos, which are very inportant to keep momentum within the brand. We had to create the destination for the new collective on the site.


Channeling The Muse

Most of us listen to music whilst working, but given the client, we kept to a strict audible diet of Siouxsie and The Banshees, Bowie, Johnny Cash, Mötley Crüe, Prince, Motörhead, and of course, Beethoven, as Kat's a classically trained pianist. Only then were our mindsets in the proper frame for this particular client.
